SA style icon Maps Maponyane shares his top style tips for guys looking to rock a style.
“Don’t forget that your best accessory to any outfit is your confidence,” he says. “Sometimes that’s all you need.”
Maps Maponyane is Investec Private Banking’s brand ambassador, and social and media star. A model and TV presenter, this trendsetter’s accolades also include SA Style Awards’ Most Stylish Male Media Personality (2013) and regular appearances at SA Fashion Week.
“Don’t be afraid to keep it basic. Be it a simple plain white or black tee, a good denim shirt, fitted black and blue jeans, a pair of white sneakers or black Oxfords, it’s far easier to layer and get it right with the basics.”
When you have this versatility in your wardrobe, you can dress for any occasion – smart, casual and corporate. “Your style can only benefit from having variety, because the possibilities are endless.”
Rule of three
“Own three basic high-quality suits. Whether you need a suit for business or pleasure, having a suit in black, navy and grey will give you more than enough options to dress up or down.”
“You can never have too many white shirts. Dress it down with a pair of jeans and undo your top two buttons (more than three and things get creepy), statement cufflinks or a slim tie.”
Ace the classics
“Don’t complicate things. If you want to get the most out of your wardrobe and value for money, avoid seasonal trends. The reality is that you will never keep up. Rather identify those classic garments that will prove timeless, even if it means paying a little bit more.”
The ‘fit’ bit
“Pulling off a style more often than not comes down to fit. You need to consider and dress with your body type in mind.”
“If your clothes are too tight, you will look uncomfortable and awkward. If it’s too loose, you will look frumpy. Finding a good tailor that will always be on call for alterations is important.”
